November is a crazy time in the news business!
Election Day is next week.
Sweeps month is heating up.
The holidays are right around the corner.
Because of all of this, many believe this is the slow season for hiring in tv news, but the opposite is often true. Most stations have signed their anchors and reporters to contracts that extend through the November ratings period. This means many News Directors are looking for strong talent right now to replace the people who are leaving in December or early 2023.
This makes it a great time to focus on your next great opportunity.
As a talent agent and coach, I can help you on two fronts.
First, getting you prepared for the next job. I work closely with reporters and anchors, helping with story construction and development, as well as delivery, either from the anchor desk or live in the field.
The next step is putting together a great reel that will get you noticed. There is no exact formula that will get you hired. The reel should be customized to each person. As a News Director and hiring manager for more than 20 years, I can help you tailor your reel, to maximize the limited time that will be given to watching your resume reel.
If you are already fully involved in your search, but haven’t found the right fit yet, the right agent can make all the difference in the world. Whether it is making the jump to a bigger market or trying to figure out the best move to further your career, the key is having smart people on your team.
Believe me, I realize there are lots of jobs out there right now. Anyone who posts a reel on LinkedIn will likely get flooded with messages from desperate News Directors. I have been there myself. A good agent will guide you through this process.
Good agents know where the good newsrooms are and which stations have a track record of growing their people and moving them to the next phase of their career. We also know how to maximize your earning potential- what is a fair salary for your position, in that market and how to negotiate your worth.
In our business, burnout levels are at an all time high. That is why tt is important to not just find A job, but the RIGHT job. There are many jobs out there in many different types of newsrooms. How do you know which is the right one for you? You can look at their product and visit the station, but how do you know what you will feel like 6 months later?
Choosing the best job and location is a very important decision. Having someone on your team who can help you improve your performance and prepare you for the next step in your career is essential right now.
This November, take advantage of the peak season when others think it is time to rest during the holidays. A great opportunity awaits. Let me help you get there!
